Getting Connected at LBL
LDAP and GMAIL
Your LBNL email account functions through Google mail and the main point for communication at LBNL. Log in at gmail.lbl.gov and check it regularly once you arrive to the Foundry. If you need to reset your LDAP password, use this link.
Once you finish OJT for the nanobio facility, you should be placed several mailing lists to receive information about the facility. Check with Tina McCoy (tmccoy@lbl.gov )if you are not receiving weekly floor emails.
Logging in to Google Mail also grants you access to many of the Google applications. Feel free to use those for your scientific work.
Internet, VPNs, and Printing
While at the Foundy you can use the wireless network to connect to the internet. We have two networks: Employee and Visitor. While the visitor network is open for all devices, the Employee network requires you to contact the Staff. The Employee network is required to access restricted LBNL networks.
An alternative way to connect to restricted LBNL networks when on the visitor network or offsite is the use a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Go to software.lbl.gov and use your LDAP to download the cisco VPN client. Follow the instructions to connect to the VPN from any computer using your LDAP.
Printer: For general printing, please print to the Toshiba eStudio2830c in 5110. The IP address is written on the side of the printer. Install the correct driver from software.lbl.gov. Login with your LDAP, scroll to Utilities Software, and install the Toshiba e-Studio Print Driver
Active Directory Account
You will need an Active Directory account to access PC computers that control instruments as well as to use the Foundry backup server "nanofiler." To get an active directory account, which is separate from your LDAP, call the Computer Help Desk, extension x4357 from any phone in the lab or at 510-486-4357 and ask to activate your active directory account. Once the account is activated, they will give you a username and password to access the computers in the building. Then email our IT support staff, Perry Lao (pplao@lbl.gov), to have a folder in the nano-filer server created for you and to be granted access.
